When my Haitian grandfather was a kid he worked picking bananas. They were poor so we often would eat a banana, but they were still green. He didn't know that later this would cause him a mild ulcer in the stomach. Since then, he always liked his bananas to be overripe, he would say “when it starts to have brown spots it's ready!”.
When I was young I used to dumpster-dive because I was poor. This would mean that most of the bananas I ate were always overripe. I could make banana bread or smoothies but got tired of eating them brown. Because of this I like my bananas to be just ripe.
This is the story of why my grandpa and I like bananas in different ways for similar reasons.
