Bread and Circus

Nantes, France, 2018
.
Bread and Circus is a reference taken from the Roman poet Juvenal. The term was used to discuss the shift of public attention away from political discourse through amusing distraction and celebration
.
.
First used in 2nd Century AD, these principles remain present in todays political climate but rather than subvert rebellion; the system has adapted to accommodate it. The concept of revolt has become institutionalised to such a point, that the act of rioting has become a variation of Bread and Circus; permitted in designated locations in an attempt to appease and manipulate the masses
.
.
The installation at Nantes for @transfertco is part of a satirical series focusing critical sociological issues. Through a version of ‘honest politics’ the project suggests lifting the veil to show plainly and without subversion, the intent and the consequences of the problems plaguing our time
