Bread and circus

This piece is based on a photo of an incident that happened in Stockholm. The police killed a 60-year-old immigrant and this was the reaction of the community as well as demonstrating. The work is talking about the concept of “Bread & Circuses” that the romans used to control the people. A full stomach and entertainment. I feel like this concept has been mastered and perpetuated ever since. With social media, smart phones, just enough money to end the month, sugar, the sense of connection but no real interaction and also activism has been some how institutionalized or controlled. Even actions like these, or demonstrations seem just like part of the circus that gives us the illusion of change. But it still shows our desire for it.
